Rodriguez
Eulogia Piedra, daughter of Thomas and Jesusa Piedra, was only 19 years old when she met Pablo Rodriguez a laborer by trade. On the 20th day of January 1893 she gave birth to a son Sebastian in the now debunked town of Crown, Atascosa, Texas. Eulogia and Pablo did not marry and it is not known the nature of their relationship. In 1897 she married Librado Vasquez in Pearsall, Frio, Texas. Around this time Sebastian went to live with Thomas and Jesusa Piedra, his grandparents, in Charlotte. At three years old he soon came to call Jesusa, mother.
Eulogia and Librado living in Pearsall had two children born to them. A son Merijildo in 1897 and Elvira in 1900. In 1910 when they moved to Charlotte, Feliciana was born . In 1916 Merijildo died of an infected molar. He was only sixteen. In the same year his father Librado passed away. I don't know what became of Pablo Rodriguez after 1893. I found a copy of his death certificate and stated he died at the age of ninety-eight of natural causes while living in Poteet, Atascosa, Texas. I have no clue as to where he may be buried. I am not able to find information as to when, where and how Librado and Eulogia died or where they are buried. I have heard from some of my sources that Librado is probably buried in the Uvalde Cemetery and Elogia is buried in a small graveyard which is now in a middle of a field in the outskirts of Charlotte. She has no grave marker except for a large boulder that marks her grave.
After the deaths of Eulogia and Librado, Elvira and Feliciana moved to Uvalde, Atascosa, Texas as young girls to live with Jesusa Piedra's sister Juanita Hernandez Hill. Unfortunately being told by reliable sources, the young girls had a rough childhood. While living in Uvalde, they met their future husbands. Elvira married Pedro Gonzalez where they became migrant farmers going where they could find work and eventually settled in Ohio. Feliciana met and married Florencio Martinez and settled in Arizona. I hope in the future as to gather some history on them and post here.
Sebastian at the age of twenty five on the twenty first of July 1918 joined the U.S. Army as a Private in the 65th Company and a year later on the second of February 1919 was given an Honorable Discharge. While working in the fields as a farmer Sebastian met the one who later would be his new bride. Her name was Antonia Ybarra Vasquez. She was born in Pearsall, Texas on the seventeenth of April 1920 to Vicente Vasquez and Ruperta Ybarra .
Sebastian was twenty seven years her senior. As I have been told, Antonia was a hard working girl who was kept by a very strict father. Sebastian went to Vicente to ask for his daughter's hand and Vicente reluctantly gave in but not after a sign of Sebastian's true love and intentions. She was only fourteen and he was fourty one. He passed the test and a year later on the nineteenth of June 1935 their first child Paula was born . They came to have eight children in all, Martin, Julian, Nasario, Antonio, Juan, Maria Lily and Rosalinda.
As one of my aunts told me, they had a lot of fun together. They really enjoyed each others company and went everywhere together, not to mentioin that Antonia didn't know how to drive. Because she didn't know how to drive an accident occured while Antonia was driving them home while Sebastian lied passed out cold from having a joyous evening. Antonia, at night, got too close to the edge of the road and there was a ditch that ran on either side that she got too close and slid off and flipped the stationwagon over. She had lost the majority of her teeth due to the car accident. Now that the family was growing Sebastian needed to take care of his family and fortunately had his army pension to help.
On the seventh of September 1960 Sebastian and Antonia officially married in Jourdanton, TexasOn the fourteenth of February 1982 Sebastian died at the Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas of natural causes. He was eighty nine years old. Unfortunately I didn't know my grandfather well enough and I barely remember him. I did get the priviledge of knowing and spending time with my grandmother Antonia before she died on the twenty-eighth of February 1988.
This is why it is so important to know your family roots, where you came from, what makes YOU you to make you proud of your heritage. Did you know that Sebastian's family blood and Antonia's family blood flow in our viens and we're all connected by that? Our future generation will have the same blood running through them. It is important to keep our family history alive in our traditions, stories and family reunions. We're not strangers, just family we haven't met yet.
